According to James Trager's Food Chronology, the fortune cookie was invented by Los Angeles noodle manufacturer David Jung in 1916. His idea came from a technique ancient Chinese rebels used: in order to exchange covert messages they would print them on small papers and conceal them inside buns. Jung thus developed thin folded cookies to hide slips of paper on which he had Confucian adages printed. |
