Preparation:
In a slow cooker stack like dominoes the half moon ham slices, then open each slice in between and put about a teaspoon of the brown sugar. (maple or imitation pancake syrup will substitute if need)
Next, sprinkle the crushed pineapple across the hole array of ham slices, slather the mustard on top of that and then the clove powder. Pour the water in the side, it's to get the heat started right.
A metal slow cooker is faster you can start the mixture boiling on the stove and then set it back on the heating base and then cook for 2 more hours. If using crockery to start from scratch it will take an hour to come up to heat and two more hours to cook on high. If you use medium cook for 4-6 hours total.
Check the liquid level every hour and after the first two hours on the half. If there is very low or no liquid add another half cup or so of hot or boiling water.
Ham will be bright red when done and very flaky. Perfect for a nice rye bread sandwich right there no need for cheese or any other condiments, it stands on it's own, although a little horseradish or Wasabi works nice.
Makes a great side for a breakfast plate, or I like to serve a slice with scalloped or au gratin potatoes. |
