As far back as I can remember, my Grandmother made these on special occasions, or just because. And my mother always made them, too. They are just so good and really full of dates , just the way I like them. | |

butter, melted |

brown sugar |

Preparation:
1 To make the filling: Boil the dates, sugar, and water until thick, about 5-10 minutes.
2 Add 1 TBSP butter, the vanilla, and the walnuts.
3 Set aside to cool a bit.
4 To prepare the crust: Combine all dry ingredients with the melted butter.
5 Press half of the mixture into a lightly greased 13 x 9 pan.
6 Cover with filling mixture and top with remaining half of crust mixture.
7 Press lightly.
8 Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.
9 Please bake NO LONGER THAN THAT!
10 Cut into squares when COMPLETELY cool(this is really important--they'll fall apart if you cut them while still warm).
Yield: 25-30 squares
