Preparation:
1. Melt baking chips in 1 cup milk over medium heat
2. Stir in remaining milk; reserve.
3. Combine salt, egg yolks, 3/4 cup sugar and vanilla; stir into reserved mixture.
4. Trim crusts from bread and cut slices into 1/2-inch cubes; place cubes into 1 1/2-quart casserole.
5. Pour custard mixture over bread cubes, being sure all cubes are soaked; blend in nuts.
6. Set casserole in pan of hot water; bake in preheated 350 F. oven 1 hour.
7. Beat egg whites and cream of tartar until frothy; gradually add 1/2 cup sugar and beat until meringue is stiff.
8. Spread meringue on casserole; brown delicately in oven. Serve warm or cold. |
