1 tablespoon ground allspice
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
4 large eggs
1 1/4 cups sugar
1 cup packed golden brown sugar
3/4 cup vegetable oil
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1 1/2 pounds green apples -- peeled, cored, cut
into 1/2-inch cubes
1 cup coarsely chopped toasted walnuts

Preparation:
Bring first 5 ingredients to boil in heavy medium saucepan over high heat,
stirring until sugar dissolves. Boil until sauce thickens and coats spoon
thickly, stirring occasionally, about 25 minutes. Add vinegar. Rewarm before
using.
Preheat oven to 350ยก. Butter and flour 9xl3-inch pan with 2- inch-high
sides. Combine 2 cups flour with next 6 ingredients in medium bowl. Using
electric mixer, beat eggs, 1 1/4 cups sugar, 1 cup brown sugar, oil and
lemon juice in large bowl until very thick, about 4 minutes. Mix in flour
mixture. Toss apples and walnuts with 2 tablespoons flour. Add to batter.
Transfer to prepared pan. Bake until tester inserted into center of cake
comes out clean, about 1 hour 5 minutes.
Pour 1/2 cup sauce over hot cake, spreading evenly. Cool cake in pan at
least 1 hour. Cut cake into squares. Top with ice cream. Spoon warm sauce
over.
