Ingredients:

     1/4           cup  butter -- softened
  2               cups  sugar
  3              large  eggs
  4             medium  bananas
  1           teaspoon  baking soda
     1/2           cup  finely chopped nuts
  3               cups  flour
     1/2      teaspoon  salt
  2          teaspoons  baking powder
     1/2           cup  buttermilk
                        ***ICING***
  2               cups  sugar
     1/4           cup  light karo
     1/2           cup  boiling water
  4                     egg whites -- stiffly beaten
 

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream butter and sugar well. Add eggs one at a time, beating thoroughly after each addition. Mash bananas and mix in the baking soda. Add to creamed mixture, alternating with buttermilk. Beat until smooth. Grease 4 (8-inch) cake pans and pour batter into them. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Cool. Frost with icing. May be prepared 1 day in advance. This is a very large, moist cake. ICING: Mix sugar with Karo; add to the boiling water and stir over medium heat. When the sugar has completely dissolved, remove from heat and cool; then pour very slowly into stiffly beaten egg whites, beating constantly. Continue to beat until icing is stiff enough to spread.
