Ingredients:

   1 1/2  Pounds        ground beef
   1      cup           Milk
   1      teaspoon      Chopped fresh or -- 1/4 teaspoon Dried sage
   1      teaspoon      Salt
     1/2  teaspoon      Dry mustard
     1/4  teaspoon      Pepper
   3      slices        Bread -- torn to small pieces
   1                    Egg
   1      Cloves        Garlic, finely chopped -- or 1/8 ts Garlic pow
   1      small         Onion -- chopped (1/4 cup)
   1      tablespoon    Worcestershire sauce
   1      small         Green bell pepper -- chopped
   1      medium        Carrot -- coarsely shredded
   4      ounces        mushroom stems -- and Pieces, drained 
   1                    Tomato -- thinly sliced
   3      slices        Processed american cheese
 

Preparation:

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all ingredients except tomato and cheese. Spread mixture in loaf pan, 9 X 5 X 3 inches. Bake 1 to 1-1/4 hours or until done; drain. Arrange tomato down center of meat loaf. Top with cheese slices cut diagonally in half. Bake 3 to 5 minutes or until cheese is melted. Remove from pan. .*1/2 cup dry bread crumbs or 3/4 cup quick-cooking oats can be substituted for the 3 slices bread.
