Preparation:
Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
Slice bread lengthwise. Place the bottom half on a foil-lined baking sheet. (Reserve the top half for another use.) Bake for 3 to 5 minutes on each side, until lightly browned and crisp. Leave oven on.
Meanwhile, cook sausage in medium skillet over medium heat, stirring to break it up, until cooked through. Drain on paper towels.
If pan is dry, add olive oil. Saute peppers and mushrooms until they begin to soften, about 5 minutes.
Place bread cut-side up on foil. Spread with sauce.
Sprinkle sausage over sauce. Top with vegetables. Sprinkle top with cheese.
Bake for 6 to 8 minutes or until cheese bubbles.
Remove to cutting board. To slice, press down with a large knife (do not use a sawing motion) and slice in a zig-zag pattern.
